The United Kingdom and Ukraine have signed a new artificial intelligence partnership aimed at developing defence and security technologies using Ukraine’s battlefield experience and the UK’s AI research capabilities.
The agreement was signed in Kyiv on August 24 by UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. It gives the UK access to Ukraine’s Avengers AI Labs, making Britain the first international partner to gain access to the platform.
UK to access Ukraine’s battlefield AI data
Avengers AI Labs uses data collected from thousands of daylight cameras and infrared sensors deployed across Ukraine’s battlefield. The system captures information on military equipment and other objects, including tanks, artillery, air-defense systems, infantry, and drones.
The UK plans to use this real-world data to help researchers and technology companies develop new AI systems for defense and national security.
The partnership brings together British universities, researchers, technology companies, and military specialists with Ukrainian engineers and defense experts.

New AI projects will target defense technology
The two countries have already started several pilot projects.
One project uses Ukrainian battlefield data and British technology to turn buried fiber-optic cables into large AI-enabled sensors. The technology is being prepared for deployment at a UK defense site and could eventually be used to protect airports, prisons, railways, and energy facilities.
Another project focuses on developing low-power AI chips for future drones, robotics, and autonomous systems. The aim is to make these systems more capable while reducing their power requirements.
Partnership expands UK-Ukraine defense cooperation
The AI agreement forms part of the broader UK-Ukraine 100 Year Partnership and comes as both countries deepen cooperation in defense technology.
The British government said the partnership will initially focus on defence and national security, while some of the technology could eventually have wider applications in protecting critical infrastructure.
The agreement also follows a separate UK decision involving defence company MBDA, allowing classified information on UK components of the SCALP long-range missile to be released to support efforts to establish local assembly lines in Ukraine
For Ukraine, the deal provides access to Britain’s research and technology ecosystem. For the UK, it offers access to data and operational experience generated during modern warfare.
The partnership, therefore, puts battlefield-tested AI at the centre of a deeper technology relationship between the two countries.
UK-Ukraine AI Defense Partnership Opens Access to Battlefield Technology

The UK and Ukraine have signed an artificial intelligence defence partnership that will give Britain access to Ukraine’s Avengers AI Labs, making the UK its first international partner.
The agreement brings together Ukrainian battlefield experience and British AI research to develop technologies for defence and national security. The partnership was signed in Kyiv on August 24 as part of the wider UK-Ukraine 100 Year Partnership.
Avengers AI Labs Uses Ukraine Battlefield Data
Avengers AI Labs uses information collected from cameras and infrared sensors deployed across Ukraine. Its systems are designed to identify objects and military equipment, including drones, tanks, artillery and air-defence systems.
British researchers will be able to work with this battlefield data alongside Ukrainian engineers and defence specialists. The access is significant because the technology is being developed from experience gathered during an active conflict.
The UK and Ukraine will use the cooperation to develop and test AI systems designed for practical defence applications.
UK and Ukraine Target AI Chips and Fiber-Optic Sensors
The partnership includes projects focused on low-power AI chips for drones, robotics and autonomous systems. Lower power requirements could allow these platforms to carry out more AI processing while operating in the field.
Another project is developing fibre-optic sensing technology that can use buried cables to detect activity around protected sites. The technology could eventually be used to protect airports, railways, energy facilities and other critical infrastructure.
The agreement expands the technology side of UK-Ukraine defense cooperation, with the two countries combining Ukraine’s battlefield experience with Britain’s research and technology capabilities.
