The United Arab Emirates has joined the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) as a strategic partner, opening a new channel for trade, investment, and business cooperation between the UAE and Pacific Island countries.

The decision was confirmed at the PIF Leaders’ Retreat held in Koror, Palau. The UAE becomes the 13th Strategic Partner of the Forum, joining China, the United States, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, India, Indonesia, Singapore, South Korea and the European Union.

The new partnership builds on the UAE’s longstanding engagement with Pacific Island nations, including cooperation in renewable energy, climate resilience, education, and sustainable development.

Trade and Investment Opportunities

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Strategic Partner status will provide a platform for closer engagement with PIF member states and open opportunities for trade, investment, and business partnerships.

The partnership will also support cooperation in areas including energy transition, digital transformation, connectivity, and climate resilience.

The UAE had already been engaging with Pacific governments and businesses before receiving Strategic Partner status. During the 55th PIF Leaders’ Meeting, held from August 30 to September 4, UAE officials and representatives of UAE companies discussed opportunities across energy, advanced technology, digital transformation, connectivity, logistics and financial services.

The UAE also participated in the Leaders’ Ascent Dialogue on Climate-Smart Investment on September 1. The discussions focused on investment in renewable energy and climate resilience as Pacific countries prepare for upcoming climate-related meetings.

UAE Expands Economic Engagement in the Pacific

The new status gives UAE companies a formal platform for deeper engagement with Pacific Island economies and creates opportunities for cooperation across several commercial sectors.

For Pacific Island countries, the partnership provides another avenue for engagement with the UAE on investment, technology, connectivity, and sustainable development. The UAE has also highlighted energy transition and digital transformation as areas for expanded cooperation.

The UAE’s Strategic Partner status, therefore, adds an economic dimension to its relationship with the Pacific, with trade, investment, and business partnerships identified by the government as key areas for future cooperation.
