Dubai Gold Rebounds in October, Remains Below September’s High

Dubai’s 24K gold price rose from AED 494 per gram on October 7 to AED 502 on October 14, recovering some recent losses. The price remains AED 40 below September’s peak of AED 542 per gram.

Dubai’s gold market has recovered from its early October low, but the rebound has yet to restore prices to the levels reached earlier in September. The movement offers a clearer picture of the market’s current position.

The price of 24-karat gold in Dubai stood at AED 502 per gram on October 14, compared with AED 494 on October 7. However, the rate had reached AED 542 per gram in early September, leaving the October 14 price of about 7.4% below that level. The figures show a meaningful recovery from the October low, but not a return to September’s high.

Gold’s recent movement reflects competing forces in international markets. The World Gold Council’s October market commentary identified rising US Treasury yields and a stronger US dollar as important factors behind September’s decline, despite strong inflows into gold-backed exchange-traded funds. These conditions illustrate why demand for gold as a store of value does not always translate into immediate price increases.

Higher bond yields can make interest-bearing investments more attractive relative to gold, which does not pay interest. A stronger dollar can also put pressure on internationally traded gold by making it more expensive for buyers using other currencies. When these forces outweigh investment demand, gold prices can weaken even when investors remain concerned about economic uncertainty.

What the movement means for UAE gold buyers

For jewelry buyers in the UAE, the decline from September’s high means the underlying gold price is lower than it was at that peak. A customer purchasing the same weight and purity of gold may, therefore, face a lower metal cost than during the September high, although the final jewelry price depends on making charges, design, and other applicable costs.

The difference also matters for people who purchase gold near the peak and are now assessing its value. Someone buying at AED 542 per gram would see a lower quoted gold value at AED 502 before accounting for resale deductions, jewelry workmanship, or differences between buying and selling prices This does not necessarily represent a realized loss unless the gold is sold.

For investors, however, a recovery from a short-term low should not be mistaken for confirmation that prices will continue rising. The direction of international bullion prices, interest-rate expectations, and movements in the dollar remain important factors to watch.

The next test for Dubai gold

The important question is whether gold can sustain its October recovery or whether renewed pressure will push prices back towards the recent low. US inflation data and expectations for Federal Reserve policy are particularly relevant because they can influence bond yields, the dollar, and international bullion prices.

Dubai’s gold market is closely connected to these international movements, meaning local prices can change even when conditions in the UAE itself remain broadly unchanged. The dirham’s peg to the US dollar also helps keep the exchange-rate relationship relatively stable, although it does not prevent Dubai gold prices from fluctuating with global bullion markets.

For now, October’s rebound indicates that some of gold’s recent losses have been recovered, but the market has not returned to September’s peak. Whether this develops into a sustained recovery will depend on the forces shaping international gold demand and the opportunity cost of holding the metal.
