Dangote Refinery IPO Set to Open Within Days as Nigeria Awaits Major Share Sale
Dangote Refinery IPO Set to Open Within Days as Nigeria Awaits Major Share Sale
The planned initial public offering of Dangote Petroleum Refinery could open within the next 10 to 12 days, according to Aliko Dangote, bringing the $20 billion refinery closer to a long-awaited listing on Nigeria’s capital market.
Dangote disclosed the timeline as the company moves toward a public share sale expected to raise about $5 billion, although the final size and terms of the offering will depend on regulatory approvals and the structure adopted for the transaction.
If completed at that scale, the offering would rank among the largest equity transactions ever undertaken on an African stock exchange.

Dangote Refinery Targets $5 Billion
The proposed IPO comes as the refinery moves from its construction and commissioning phase into a larger expansion programme.
The facility, located in Lekki, Lagos, has a stated processing capacity of 650,000 barrels per day. Dangote has also outlined plans to increase capacity to about 1.4 million barrels per day as the business expands.
The planned share sale is expected to provide capital for that expansion while bringing new investors into the refinery’s ownership structure.
The transaction would give investors an opportunity to take exposure to one of Africa’s largest private-sector energy projects through the Nigerian capital market.
IPO Terms Will Determine Investor Interest
The headline $5 billion figure does not by itself establish how attractive the offering will be.
Investors will need to see the proposed valuation, the percentage of the refinery being offered, the amount of new capital being raised and the financial position of the business.
The refinery’s revenue, profitability, cash generation and debt obligations will also become important reference points once the formal offer documents are released.
Those details will determine how the market values the refinery relative to the amount of capital investors are being asked to commit.
Major Listing for Nigerian Exchange
A successful listing would significantly increase the presence of the energy sector on Nigeria’s equities market and add one of the country’s largest industrial assets to the pool of publicly traded companies.
The scale of the transaction could also increase the Nigerian Exchange’s market capitalisation and broaden the range of large companies available to domestic and international investors.
The deal is therefore being watched closely by the Nigerian capital market, particularly because of the size of the proposed offering and Dangote Refinery’s importance to the country’s petroleum industry.
IPO Timeline Has Shifted Before
Dangote Refinery’s public offering has been discussed for several years, with previous expectations around the timing changing as the company prepared for the transaction.
Dangote’s latest 10-to-12-day timeframe therefore represents a fresh indication rather than a completed launch date.
The formal offer documents, regulatory clearance and announcement of the opening date will ultimately determine when investors can subscribe.
Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission has previously cautioned investors against unauthorised offers or marketing of supposed Dangote Refinery shares before the transaction receives the necessary approvals.
The latest development puts the IPO closer to the market, but investors will still have to wait for the final terms before determining the size, valuation and structure of the offer.
