Anthropic Agrees to $45 Billion Nscale Deal for AI Computing Capacity

Anthropic has agreed to spend $45 billion to rent AI cloud computing power from Nscale’s data center development in West Virginia, as the AI startup moves to secure enough capacity for expected growth in demand for its products.

The agreement runs for six years and represents about 460 megawatts of power capacity, according to a person familiar with the arrangement. Bloomberg News first reported the deal.

Nscale, a cloud infrastructure provider, will deploy Nvidia’s Vera Rubin chips to support Anthropic’s computing requirements, the person said. The arrangement will provide Anthropic with access to computing infrastructure needed to run its artificial intelligence systems and products.

Anthropic has been looking to secure additional computing capacity as demand increases for its AI services, including Claude Code, its AI coding tool. The company has been expanding its computing infrastructure through agreements with different providers as it works to meet the expected increase in usage.

The Nscale agreement adds another large block of computing capacity to that effort. At roughly 460 megawatts, the capacity covered by the deal represents a significant commitment to the power and infrastructure required to operate advanced AI systems.

Anthropic Looks to Secure More Computing Capacity

Access to computing power has become a major requirement for AI companies as demand for their models increases. Anthropic has been moving to secure capacity ahead of that expected demand rather than relying only on infrastructure that is already available.

The company’s latest agreement with Nscale covers capacity at Nscale’s West Virginia data center development. Nscale will provide the underlying cloud infrastructure, while Nvidia’s Vera Rubin chips will be used to support Anthropic’s computing needs.

The six-year term gives the arrangement a long duration, with Anthropic committing to the capacity as it expands its AI services.

The $45 billion figure refers to the amount Anthropic has agreed to spend on renting the computing power over the six-year agreement. It is not a purchase of Nscale or its data center assets.

Nscale to Deploy Nvidia Vera Rubin Chips

Nscale plans to use Nvidia’s Vera Rubin chips for the computing capacity covered by the agreement.

Vera Rubin is Nvidia’s newer generation of AI computing technology, designed for demanding workloads involved in training and running advanced AI models.

For Nscale, deploying the new Nvidia technology at its West Virginia development allows the company to provide the type of high-performance infrastructure required by AI companies such as Anthropic.

The reported agreement therefore combines three major elements: Anthropic’s long-term demand for computing power, Nscale’s data center infrastructure and Nvidia’s latest AI computing technology.

Anthropic Has Already Secured Other AI Capacity

Anthropic Has Already Secured Other AI Capacity

The Nscale agreement follows another major infrastructure commitment by Anthropic.

In May, Anthropic agreed to rent the full computing power of SpaceX’s Colossus 1 facility in Memphis, Tennessee. The facility houses more than 220,000 Nvidia processors and provides 300 megawatts of new capacity, according to Reuters.

That agreement was also part of Anthropic’s effort to overcome capacity constraints as demand for its services grows.

The latest Nscale deal shows that Anthropic is continuing to add computing capacity through multiple infrastructure providers rather than relying on a single data center or cloud platform.

What the Nscale Deal Covers

Under the reported agreement, Anthropic will rent computing capacity from Nscale’s West Virginia development for six years.

The capacity is approximately 460 megawatts, while Nscale will deploy Nvidia Vera Rubin chips to meet Anthropic’s requirements.

Anthropic and Nscale had not immediately responded to Reuters’ requests for comment when the report was published.

The deal was first reported by Bloomberg News, which cited people familiar with the matter. Reuters independently reported the key terms through a person familiar with the arrangement.

For Anthropic, the agreement secures another substantial source of computing power at a time when demand for AI products is rising. For Nscale, it provides a major long-term customer for its West Virginia data center development.

The reported $45 billion, six-year agreement covering about 460 megawatts is the latest major infrastructure commitment from Anthropic as the company works to expand the computing resources behind its AI products.
