Vietnam GDP Surges 9.95% in Q3 as Exports and Investment Accelerate

Vietnam’s economy grew 9.95% year on year in the third quarter of 2026, accelerating from 8.81% growth in the second quarter as exports, industrial activity and investment expanded strongly.

The latest figure from the General Statistics Office puts Q3 growth at the highest quarterly rate since the COVID-19 period. For the first nine months of the year, GDP increased 9.01% from a year earlier. Industry and construction grew 11.21% during the period, while services expanded 8.69%.

Exports remained a major source of growth. Vietnam exported $434.30 billion worth of goods in the first nine months, up 24.5% from the same period last year. September exports alone reached $59.48 billion, an annual increase of 39.1%.

Imports grew even faster. September imports rose 45.8% to $58.21 billion, producing a monthly trade surplus of $1.27 billion. However, the stronger growth in imports left Vietnam with a $19.42 billion merchandise trade deficit for the first nine months, compared with a $16.87 billion surplus during the same period of 2025.

Investment also strengthened. Total realized investment across the economy reached 3,109.6 trillion Vietnamese dong in the first nine months, up 15.1% from a year earlier. Realized foreign direct investment stood at $21.07 billion, an increase of 12.1% and the highest nine-month level in five years, according to the statistics office.

The manufacturing and industrial base continued to support the expansion. Industry and construction grew 11.21% in the first nine months, while the industrial production index increased 16.7% in September from a year earlier.

The stronger growth is also coming with higher price pressures. Consumer prices increased 5.08% in September from a year earlier, while Vietnam’s nine-month economic performance has been accompanied by a sharp increase in import costs. Crude oil imports fell 13.5% in volume during the period but increased 14.4% in value, while refined fuel imports rose 11.5% in volume and 79.3% in value.

What Businesses Should Know

The figures point to strong demand across Vietnam’s export and manufacturing sectors, but the faster growth in imports shows that businesses are also increasing their purchases of inputs, equipment and other goods from overseas. Companies involved in manufacturing, logistics, industrial supplies and export-related services may therefore see continued activity if the trend persists into the final quarter.

Higher import values also matter for businesses that depend on foreign materials and energy. Rising input costs can affect margins even when sales and production are growing, making currency movements, commodity prices and supplier costs important factors for companies operating in or trading with Vietnam.

What It Means for Your Money

For investors and businesses exposed to Vietnam, the latest data points to a rapidly expanding economy, but the numbers also show areas that require attention. GDP growth is strong, while inflation reached 5.08% in September and the country recorded a $19.42 billion merchandise trade deficit over the first nine months.

For consumers, higher inflation can gradually increase the cost of goods and services and reduce purchasing power if income growth does not keep pace. For investors, the combination of strong economic growth, rising investment and higher price pressures means Vietnam’s next economic data releases will remain important for assessing business conditions, interest rates and the broader investment environment.

Vietnam entered the final quarter with a nine-month GDP growth of 9.01%, while the government continues to target annual growth of 10%.
